Clash Mag x ONE THING WELL Premiere

A unisex label born in London two years ago, Jessica Gebhart’s I AND ME has a decade’s worth of denim knowledge separating it from the competition: Gebhart was a jeans expert at Topshop for ten years.
Marking the arrival of the brand’s sophomore collection – titled ‘One Thing Well’ – AW16 draws from an autumnal trip to Japan taken in 2015, in which the creative director fully embraced her surroundings.
“The Lee Ufan museum and Tadao Ando buildings on Naoshima island took my breath away,” she explains. “I’ve never felt so inspired by space before; the materials, the light, shadows, the air, so white and grey and sun bleached, smooth yet raw, Ando’s architectural style inspired the fabric and design of the garments.”
Initially founded with the intentions to produce ‘contemporary solutions for men and women which surpassed seasonal trends’, the new collection delivers with a beautiful look book, pictured above, shot by Laura Coulson and with flower arrangements from Fjura.
“As always, simple shapes allow for the texture and palette to talk,” suggests Gebhart. Using Japanese Selvedge denim then, the line-up explores loose silhouettes and raw hems, with baseball top necklines neighbouring high neck sleeveless pieces; jersey tees with Japanese text (‘To Me And I’, the Japanese brand name translation) and pinstripe grey merino wool pieces feature elsewhere, while socks and denim hats (a collaboration with the milliner Carla Rose) complete the sartorial offerings.
